Power outages are rare, but they do occur. This can occur because of a fault on the electrical system network or in recent times because of a national energy shortage.

Given the current energy gaps and the pressure to introduce renewable into the UK power system we have become more and more dependent on solar and wind to meet a green/climate agenda and net zero. We still have traditional power systems, but these have greatly been reduced under a private infrastructure system that has not looked and the investment needed to sustain the current and future country power needs properly in my opinion.

The UK also looks to its European neighbors for power at high load periods of the day in order to meet demand, but this may not always be available given their own country needs and possible faults with their systems. We believe that power outages will occur more often in the future due to insufficient generation capacity in the UK.

So what does this mean? In a situation where there is an insufficient supply of electricity to meet the demand of customers a rota system for disconnection is deployed. These are very rare and generally are temporary, four to eight hours normally.

Rota load disconnection, in simple terms, refers to a method of managing and balancing electricity demand by disconnecting specific groups of customers from the UK power grid in a scheduled manner.

A fault on the system could be a short duration loss of power or in some cases long duration depending on the nature of the fault and the conditions around service provider infrastructure and the weather.

This disconnection method helps to prevent overloading or blackouts during periods of high demand, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for everyone who is still connected, rural areas may well be hit first.

Critical consumers back up systems to the areas that cannot function without power so are protected from power cuts by emergency backup systems that keep supplies maintained. These include critical national infrastructure, like air traffic control centers, hospital facilities and large or critical businesses, high end housing etc.
